Founded in 1887, the ASUC was the original students’ association of the University of California when Berkeley was the only UC campus. During the early twentieth century the ASUC controlled a wide range of student services- anything on campus that was not related to academics was run by ASUC including student conduct, the student store, Cal Athletics, and all student organization services.
Today, the ASUC continues to lead the way in how students’ association represent, advocate, and serve students on campuses in the UC system, California, and the nation.. The ASUC advocates for students on a University, local, state, and national level and represents the student body on administrative campus committees, in addition to controlling funding for student clubs and organizations, providing resources and student programming, overseeing commercial activities and student services including the Cal Student Store and Lower Sproul Plaza in partnership with the ASUC Student Union.
